When you turn the right faucet on your sink, you expect cold water to come out. When radio listeners turn on their favorite radio station, similarly, they expect a certain mix and type of music to come out of their speakers. This mix is the station's format. A station's format is designed to reach a specific range of audience. By understanding what types of listeners each format reaches, can help Maine small business owners to ensure that their messages fall on the most receptive ears.
Each week, 93% of adults turn on the radio, more than any other medium including TV or social media. Last month, media research firm Nielsen released a study of which formats consumers prefer in markets like Portland. Here are the top five favorite formats by share of listening.
All other formats including Classic Rock and Sports controlled less than 5.4% of the total listening.
