Maine Small Business Owners Find Customers When The Sun Don't Shine

Posted by Larry Julius on Thu, Aug 16, 2018 @ 10:02 AM

For Maine small business owners, advertising on Portland radio seems to be a day job. Although most radio stations broadcast 24 hours, some advertisers believe no one tunes-in at night. Not only is this wrong, these misguided companies are missing a valuable marketing opportunity.

Last week, 699,315 adult consumers living in southern Maine listened to a Portland radio station. This is substantially more than watched a local TV station; read a local newspaper; or thumbed through a local magazine.

But, just because the sun sets, radio listeners don't roll up their ears. According to Nielsen, 46% of consumers who listen to Portland radio between 6am and 7pm also listen at night.

Portland Radio Rises Above Static For Maine Small Business Owners

Posted by Larry Julius on Fri, Aug 03, 2018 @ 08:01 AM

Eighteen years ago, when the millennium was fresh, Maine small business owners had relatively few media options available for advertising their goods and services. There was local Portland radio. Local TV. Local Newspaper. Local Magazines.

It's hard to believe in the year 2000 there were no iPads, iPods, iPhones, Facebook, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, and Sirius/XM, Hulu, Roku, Netflix, Fire Sticks, Kindles, Nooks, Fitbits, Apple Watches, or countless other devices and distractions.

The inundation of new media since then has taken a toll on most legacy media. Radio, however, has been the exception. Awesome news for Maine businesses who depend on Portland radio advertising to deliver customers.

How To Build Your Business's Brand On Portland Radio

Posted by Larry Julius on Sat, Jul 29, 2017 @ 06:01 AM

Ernie Boch, Jr. is one of the largest auto dealers in New England  He credits radio advertising with building his company's brand and his profits. Maine small business owners can learn a lot from Mr. Boch. Especially when it comes to using Portland radio to market their goods and services.

In a recent article published in Radio Ink, Mr. Boch described his formula for ensuring his radio advertising delivers his branding objectives.  "I would rather advertise to a million people a bunch of different times," explains Mr. Boch, than 10 million people once. Frequency trumps all. Frequency beats everything. Frequency and consistency."

To emulate Mr. Boch's success on Portland radio, the first thing a Maine small business owner should do is to establish a high-priority marketing objective.

Maine Small Business Owners Are Integral Part of Portland Radio History

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Aug 21, 2016 @ 12:30 PM

On August 20, 1920, radio station 8MK went on the air in Detroit, Michigan. This was the first radio station in the world to commence regularly scheduled, daily programs. At exactly 8:15pm that day, 96 years ago this week, an announcer proclaimed into a megaphone attached to a crude transmitter, "This is 8MK calling." This was followed by the playing of two phonograph records, “Roses of Picardy” and “Annie Laurie.”

When the second record completed, the announcer took to the air again and asked the audience of about 30 homes, "How do you get it?" Then, an advertising executive from the Detroit News, the newspaper that owned the station, played Taps ending the historic broadcast.

Radio has grown from reaching a slim audience in 1920 to become the most used medium in America. According to Nielsen, every month, AM/FM radio reaches 97% of all adults...and Maine small business owners have been part of radio's growth.

4 Things Maine Small Business Owners Don't Know About Portland Radio

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Feb 28, 2016 @ 11:20 AM

You've heard of "old wives tales", right? You know, a traditional belief that is regarded as unscientific or incorrect.  Things like touching a toad can cause warts; eating carrots will improve your vision; or shaving causes hair to grow in  thicker.  None of which are correct.

Then there are the "old marketers tales". These are a set of beliefs that many Maine small owners believe about radio advertising that simply are not true. For example: nobody listens to the radio anymore; for a radio campaign to be successful you need to advertise during morning drivetime; nobody listens to radio at night or on the weekend; and young people never listen to the radio anymore.  Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. and Wrong.

A study released this month by Nielsen dispels these "old marketers tales" and explains the facts every Maine small business owner needs to know about advertising on Portland radio.

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Dec 27, 2015 @ 02:46 PM

If you listened to a Portland radio station last week, then you probably heard commercials for Home Depot, Macy's, Walgreens, JC Penney and Jared.  These retailers account for 5 out of the top 10 biggest spenders on radio last week. These companies clearly know something most Maine small business owners don't: radio, according to Ad Age magazine, delivers an "eye popping" return-on-investment.  Ad age goes on to say that advertisers can expect higher ROI from radio than TV, digital, or social media.

Maine Small Business Owners Deserve To Know The Truth About Radio

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Nov 29, 2015 @ 10:00 AM

Quick According to the Bible, while in the Garden of Eden, what did Eve ask Adam to take a bite of?  An apple, right?  Actually, the Bible does not ever identify the fruit that grew on the tree of knowledge. Although it might have been an apple, biblical historians think that it was most likely a pomegranate. The apple myth seems to have been spawned by Renaissance painters adding elements of Greek mythology to Biblical themes.

Radio advertising has its own apple. If you ask a Maine small business owner how many times their commercial needs to be heard to be effective, they will probably answer three.  But that, too, is probably not right.  So before investing in Portland radio in order to sell its products and services, business owners need to know the truth about the 3 time theory.

Portland Radio Dominates The Hours When Maine Small Business is Open

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Oct 11, 2015 @ 01:51 PM

A few weeks ago in Forbes Magazine, Doug Schoen urged business owners to "be paying more attention to radio, its reach and potential to help our businesses. It’s doing the job with expert efficiency." A study released last week by Nielsen continues to emphasize Schoen's advice.

Nielsen's Total Audience Report that measured American's media consumption between May and July of this year shows that during the hours when most Maine small business owners are open is the same time when AM/FM radio rules over all other media. In other words, Portland radio is likely to be the last medium used when Maine consumers are most likely to buy.  What a great time to advertise.
