Advertising on Portland Radio Brings Smiles To Maine Business

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Aug 05, 2018 @ 04:36 PM

There are 25,782,816 teeth in southern Maine. Over the next 12 months, according to Nielsen, 62% of them will end up in the offices of 600 or so practicing dentists.

The majority of dentists in southern Maine are self-employed, making them, by definition, small business owners. These owners are fighting, dare I say, tooth-and-nail for their share of $280 million in patient billing.

Advertising on Portland radio has proven to be an effective way for some dental professionals to recruit patients...and not just because radio is an "oral" medium. Buxton, Maine based Saco River Dentistry, for example, credits its radio advertising with contributing to a 426% increase in new patients this year versus last year.

For any Maine small business that advertises, including dentists, it turns out that the reach of an advertising campaign ranks very high in factors that ultimately convert a target audience into paying customers. Earlier this year, Nielsen released a study that found just that.

Top Reasons Maine Business Owners Love Advertising On Portland Radio

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Jul 29, 2018 @ 10:48 AM

On July 25, 1925 WCSH-AM, became the first radio station in Maine. Since that day, Maine small business owners have depended on Portland radio to successfully advertise their goods and services.

A lot of things have changed over the last 93 years. WCSH no longer broadcasts from the lobby of the Congress Street Hotel (notice the station's call letters). Also, the spot on the AM dial once occupied by WCSH is now home to WZAN, the local ESPN radio affiliate.

One thing that hasn't changed, though, is that hundreds of Maine business owners still invest their advertising and marketing dollars on Portland radio stations. Here are the top 3 reasons why.

Posted by Larry Julius on Wed, Jul 25, 2018 @ 02:20 PM

If, during the first 6 months of 2018, sales at your Maine small business did not expand by at least 5.5% versus the same period in 2017, then you are not grabbing your fair share of retail growth. According to the latest census data, 5.5% is the amount by which the retail sales economy has grown.

So, if your sales have have been flat or edged up by only a couple of percent, then that means your competitors have been eating your lunch. Advertising on Portland radio can help you claim the share of business growth you are leaving on the table. Here's how I know.

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Jul 22, 2018 @ 09:40 AM

The 700,000 people who tuned-in to a Portland radio station last week could not help but hear commercials for Amazon's Prime Day. Radio advertising is not a typical part of the company's advertising mix. Last week, though, Amazon broadcast a ton of commercials across the AM and FM dials.

TV Networks and Maine Business Owners Depend on Radio Ads For Results

Posted by Larry Julius on Thu, Jul 12, 2018 @ 12:52 PM

Thousands of Maine small business owners depend on Portland radio to attract new customers. Radio advertising works so well that even TV networks benefit from it.  A recent study demonstrates just how well.

First of all, radio reaches more adults each week than any other medium. More than TV. More than smartphones. More than newspapers. More than anything. Last week, for instance, almost 700,000 consumers living in southern Maine tuned into a Portland radio station.

So, when a national TV network wanted to compel viewers to tune-in to a recent mini-series, it advertised the show on the radio. To determine if the advertising paid off, Nielsen, a media research company, partnered with Cumulus Westwood One, a radio broadcasting company, to measure the results. Let's just say the results were spectacular.

Posted by Larry Julius on Sat, Jul 07, 2018 @ 01:43 PM

When a Maine small business owner invests in an advertising campaign, the goal of the ads should never be to sell a product. The primary purpose for any type of ad including those on TV, on radio, or online, is to be remembered. When a consumer can't recall your company's message when it's time to make a purchase, chances are they'll buy from your competitors.

So, when a business owner has to choose between purchasing ads on Portland radio, TV, or digital, the owner needs to know which ads are most likely to be remembered. Spoiler alert: it's the radio commercials. How do we know? Science tells us so.

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, May 06, 2018 @ 12:52 PM

If you listened to Portland radio last week, just like 93% of everyone else, then you probably know this phone number: 1-877-Kars-4-Kids.

I can't speak for you, but I can't get the sound of those cute little kids singing the company jingle out of my head.

Stuck in a prospective customer's head. That's a place every Maine small business owner yearns to be. A jingle is a great way to get there.

Kars-4-Kids is a charity that encourages people to turn old cars into charitable contributions.

According to Billboard, the bible of the music industry, the Kars-4-Kids jingle drives results.
