Maine Small Business Owners Must Read This Before Buying Advertising

Posted by Larry Julius on Thu, Sep 27, 2018 @ 08:30 AM

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) advises that every Maine small business engage in advertising.

"Think you have a great product?" asks the SBA. "Unfortunately, no one's going to know about it unless you advertise."  The SBA goes on to say, "Advertising, if done correctly, can do wonders for your product sales, and you know what that means: more revenue and more success for your business",

Advertising options for business owners in southern Maine are abundant. There's local TV; local newspapers; local magazines; and a bazillion (that's bazillion with a "b") online options.  Recent research, however, concludes that the best option is advertising on Portland radio.

What Maine Small Business Owners Need To Know About TV Advertising

Posted by Larry Julius on Thu, Aug 23, 2018 @ 05:33 PM

I just don't understand. Why isn't advertising on Portland radio the first choice of every Maine small business owner? Hundreds of local companies know, that by any measurement, local radio is the superior way to turn prospects into customers. But, some other companies, perplexingly, still choose TV first.

In a moment, I am going to present a cogent case to prove that if a Maine business owner chooses to advertise on TV, then it must, to ensure success, also invest in a radio schedule.

Before I do that, though, I think it is important to insist on Portland radio's superiority as an advertising and marketing medium for any Maine business. I can distill my argument into three components: Reach, Recall, and Return.

Almost half of America's largest marketing companies are planning to increase their advertising expenditures over the next 12 months. This is according to a survey conducted by Nielsen among Chief Marketing Officers at some of the nation's most prestigious brands.

Satellite Radio: What Maine Small Business Owners Need To Know

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, May 27, 2018 @ 11:31 AM

A very smart, Maine small business owner told me the other day, "The truth is, no one listens to Portland radio anymore in their cars. Most people listen to satellite radio." Clearly, the customer is not always right.

The fact is, AM/FM radio is, by far, the most used commercial medium in Maine and in America. Satellite radio is barely a blip on consumer's radar. Here is a bit of history

In 2001, XM radio launched its first satellite into space. The company's goal was to provide, in exchange for a monthly subscription fee, hundreds of entertainment channels with CD quality sound to motorists wherever they travel.

The following year, Sirius Radio, launched its satellites to offer a competing service. By 2007, both companies were, according to Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Wienkes, "on life support". So, XM and Sirius merged.

Flash forward to 2018, 11 years after the "life-saving" merger. Has satellite radio put a dent in the audience for AM/FM radio. In a word: No. Here are the facts.

Life Lesson For Maine Small Business Owners From The Obituaries

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Apr 22, 2018 @ 09:43 AM

Who would think that the obituary pages could provide an advertising lesson for Maine Small Business owners?

One million Americans die each week. Very few of the departed, however, earn an obituary in the New York Times. To qualify to be immortalized on the pages of the nation's second largest newspaper, a remarkable life is required.

Last week, the Times featured  remembrances of two voices that are were fixtures on Portland radio. Carl Kasell and Art Bell.

"Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising." Although this was written by Mark Twain in 1889, it still resonates with Maine small business owners who have the ambition to expand.

In 1889, advertising media consisted of newspapers, handbills, and sandwich boards. Today, southern Maine businesses must choose among a score of viable options with new ones presenting themselves every day.

Since July 25, 1925, the day WCSH-AM took to the air, Maine small business owners have depended on Portland radio to advertise and market their goods and services.

Based on 5 significant digits, Portland radio is still the most reliable choice for business owners with the desire to grow.

How To Build Your Business's Brand On Portland Radio

Posted by Larry Julius on Sat, Jul 29, 2017 @ 06:01 AM

Ernie Boch, Jr. is one of the largest auto dealers in New England  He credits radio advertising with building his company's brand and his profits. Maine small business owners can learn a lot from Mr. Boch. Especially when it comes to using Portland radio to market their goods and services.

In a recent article published in Radio Ink, Mr. Boch described his formula for ensuring his radio advertising delivers his branding objectives.  "I would rather advertise to a million people a bunch of different times," explains Mr. Boch, than 10 million people once. Frequency trumps all. Frequency beats everything. Frequency and consistency."

To emulate Mr. Boch's success on Portland radio, the first thing a Maine small business owner should do is to establish a high-priority marketing objective.

To survive, Maine small business owners need to market themselves to consumers who have the need, desire, and, most importantly, the means to purchase their goods and services. Recent research indicates Portland radio delivers the audiences Maine businesses covet the most.

Maine Small Business Owners Ask: Is Portland Radio Still Relevant?

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Mar 19, 2017 @ 05:20 PM

In about 43 months, radio turns 100 years old. So, it's a fair question for Maine small business owners to ask: Is Portland radio still relevant to listeners in 2017?

"You wouldn’t know it from all the media coverage focused on streaming video and streaming music," said media expert Doug Schoen in Forbes Magazine, "but recent Nielsen data shows radio actually has the most reach among American media consumers."

Other recent data supports Mr. Schoen's assertion. Not only is the venerable medium healthy, it remains a powerful force for both the listeners and for the Maine small business owners that advertise their goods and services.

Here is an overview of radio's robust vital signs.

Should I Advertise On My Favorite Portland Radio Station? Maybe, Not.

Posted by Larry Julius on Sun, Mar 05, 2017 @ 09:11 AM

One of the great challenges of selling advertising is trying to convince a Maine small business owner they shouldn't run commercials on a Portland radio station just because it is their favorite. These well-intentioned business people are sometimes victims of the halo effect.

The halo effect is a well-documented cognitive bias that occurs when a person applies their overall impression of a company to each of the company's component characteristics. In other words: I love everything about my favorite radio station, so I have no doubt it would be a perfect place to advertise my business. In this case, although untested, I have assigned positive traits to the advertising value of the station based on the station's knack for playing my favorite music.

Warning, Will Robinson! Often, the halo effect leads to some very bad business decisions. This is one of them.
